Harlem Treasures - $10.00Harlem Treasures: A Unique Guide to Our Neighborhood Treasures and Sights, enlightens the tourists—and native New Yorkers—who come uptown for such cultural landmarks, directs the serious seeker to Harlem’s side-street architectural, spiritual, and culinary jewels, and entertains the armchair traveler with historical tidbits, some familiar and some not. This compact, 114-page volume includes detailed maps, archival photos, a history of Harlem, and a guide to restaurants, museums, theaters, 91 community churches, and two mosques, as well as a code of behavior for visitors who go to services, where “dignity and celebration are the themes that underscore worship.” Funded by a grant from Habitat for Humanity, Harlem Treasures was produced by HCCI in partnership with Columbia’s Alliance for Community Enhancement (ACE), a nonprofit management lab run by students working toward their Master of Public Affairs degree in the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA). |

Signs of Hope In the City: Ministries of Community Renewal - $20.00Edited by: Robert D. Carle & Louis A. Decaro Jr. This collection of essays describes a variety of ministries throughout New York City that have endeavored to rebuild and restore their communities. This collection provides a fresh approach and perspective to urban ministry and community development. The stories of mission work accomplished throughout NYC serve as a powerful resource and model to drive today’s practitioners of urban ministry and to government and business leaders who are invested in community renewal. This 281-page guide explores the missions of New York through the context of African American, Latino and Asian community efforts. Many of the essays include useful statistical information on the profiled communities. Signs of Hope dedicates a full chapter (Raising Lazarus) to HCCI, highlighting its history and successful effort to rebuild Harlem’s Bradhurst community. |
